English text for the monument
Monument to the Victims of the Haiku Persecution Incidents
Between February 14, 1940, and December 6, 1943, at least forty-four haiku poets were arrested in the name of the Public Security Preservation Laws for having composed haiku poems considered critical or satirical of militarism, the war or the political authorities of that time.Thirteen of them served prison sentences without parole. Many endured extremely severe conditions, both physically and morally, while in custody, and some died after being released, from illnesses incurred during their confinement. We vow never to forget their sacrifice and suffering, and never again to accept dictatorial political power. By erecting this monument, we express our hope that peace, respect for human rights, freedom of thought, speech and expression may prevail forever.
